THE MUSEUM TRIP
A few weeks ago rm 5 went to the musem to learn about polithanta the snail.
We learnt what kind of animals attacked the snail:the Rat, Pig ,Possom and Weka.
We learnt about some of the traps for the animals that hurt and kill the polithanta and other snails. We also learnt about the different types of snail shells and we found it really fun.
We got to find rocks that were souposed to be snails and they had names on them that told you what killed them. We made a graph on the predotors that kill them and the possum kills the most. There was a big polosterine snail as big as a three year old and soon the staff are going to hang it up on a shelf next to a big Dinosaur. We got to draw a picture of a BIG snail and we had to try to get all the tiny details on the paper.
We are a class of 8 and 9 year old students, based in Nelson; New Zealand. We are excited about this this year so stay in touch and watch us grow!

In the start of this year went to the aquatic center for swimming lessons.
The top 2 classes were practicing breastroke, backstroke and swimming 50m freestyle, and if the 2 classes have spare time they would do some diving in the lane pool. But the other classes would just do 1/4 [quarter]of the pool freestyle, backstroke, and kicking with flutter board.

museum trip
On Friday room 5 went to the town museum. These gastropods are large, with shells up to 9 cm across.
Their striking delicately patterned shells come in an array of shades, from brown or red to yellow or black. The structure of these shells is very delicate, with a very thin layer of calcium carbonate, covered by a thicker chitinous outer layer. These snails need moist surroundings, otherwise the outer layerSpecies in the genus Powelliphanta are carnivorous and eat mostly earthworms or slugs. They are nocturnal. They need moist surroundings and thus they live buried under leaf mould and logs.
They can live for 20 years or more and are slow to mature, reaching sexual maturity around 5 years of age. They are hermaphrodites, having both male and female characteristics. They lay 5 to 10 large eggs a year.
Powelliphanta uses a rudimentary radula to devour its prey. The radula is like a belt of teeth, which scrapes chunks of flesh into the oesophagus. Far from being ingested whole, its prey are subjected to prolonged radulation dries, shrinks and cracks. This happens often in museum shells of this genus which are stored dry; when they dry too much, the shell shatters explosively into fairly small pieces
Hidden away in New Zealand’s forests and grasslands is a bewildering array of native land snails, which range from the microscopic to the massive.
Among these are at least 21 species and 51 sub-species of Powelliphanta snails – which represent some of the most distinctive invertebrates in New Zealand.

This year so far we have done swimming sports. The swimming sports went on for ever I came first in free style and second in back stroke. it was awesome.
museum trip
This year in room 5 we had a museum trip. We went for an exhibition at town, on Powelliphanta snail.
The things we learned:
Powelliphanta are giants of the snail world. They can reach up to 90mm across, or the size of a man’s fist.
They are also beautiful. Their oversize shells come in an array of colours and patterns, ranging from hues of red and brown to yellow and black.
Powelliphanta snails are most unlikely to be found in your garden. favour living in the forest, and particularly like to eat earthworms, sucking them up through their mouth just like we eat spaghetti!
